Mandriva One + Metisse – The Pefect Setup

Metisse is a window manager developped by the In Situ project. It is available under the GPL Licence. Mandriva Linux is using Metrisse in its latest Live-CD. Metisse differs from a classic 3D desktop ("the cube") in the way that it offers innovative windows interactions, thus enforcing work efficiency. It is using basic openGL commands for most of its feature and can run on entry level 3D graphic cards. This workshop describes the hard disk installation and Mandriva One setup. Additionally you wll find information how to use the Metrisse 3D Desktop.

Step 1: Download Mandrive One – Metisse Inside and burn a CD

Mandriva One 2007 GNOME - Metisse Inside here:

Please find you favourite server, download the iso image and burn it using your preferred software.

 

Step 2: Starting the Live CD

 

After burning the iso image you downloaded in Step 1, you will get a Live-CD. Please reboot your PC. The BIOS should allow booting your box via CD-ROM device.

Mandriva One will start with the following screen:

 


After pressing ESC key, you will get a detailed view:



The setup will start with the language you would like to use. After that, you have to read and accept the license agreement.





Please make sure to set your keyboard layout correctly.



This is the time to set your Time Zone accurately:






Gnome 2.16 will start and all programs will run from you CD-ROM device. Use this opportunity to discover everything or continue with the hard disk setup:





If you like to install Mandriva One to your hard disk, you have to open a console.





Get root permissions first using the su command and type the following command to start the hard disk installation:

 

draklive-install



 

You can use the free space or choose a different partition on you hard disk. Please be careful, you will loose all data on the selected partition.



The setup program will now copy all necessary files to your hard disk. This can take some time.



We are finishing this step with the “Boot Loader” installation.





Remove the CD-ROM and restart you PC.

Step 3: Mandriva One post install settings

 

Mandriva will now ask you to configure the network and Internet. Select you Ethernet device and choose your connection protocol. We are using the manual configuration like this:











In the next step you have to set an administrator password and to create a user.




 

The “First Boot Wizard” will assist you to register Mandriva and to create a Mandriva account. You can skip, if you want.




 

It’s done! After looking in with the username and password you just created, Mandriva will start a Gnome session. Please click on the “Find more about Metisse” button, to open Firefox and the related Metisse website.

Just to see how easy it is, here some examples:

 

To rotate window horizontally, go on window top or bottom border, press and hold left mouse button, a menu appear and move mouse cursor over X rotation and then move mouse cursor to rotate window. You can also use key binding Super-F6 and Super-F7 with mouse over the rotated window.

 

To rotate window vertically, go on window left or right border, press/hold left mouse button, move mouse cursor on Y rotation and move mouse cursor, release left mouse button when rotation is ok for you. You can also use Super-F4 / Super-F5.
