MEPIS has three config utilities, KDE Control Center, Mepis System Center and System Configuration. Most of your desktop, security, user, system settings are managed from Control Center. Quote "The MEPIS System Center contains utilities for making systemwide changes that are unique in MEPIS or that are not easily done otherwise." EndQuote. System Configuration is for advanced config. MEPIS uses Konqueror for file management which it does well. I do believe that XFM is superior to either Windows Explorer or Konqueror. I find it annoying to have to reset View in Konqueror everytime I open it. I can not comment on Gnome's file manager as I have not used Gnome.
Installation On booting up the Disk you are greeted by the MEPIS boot splash, the boot options filling the top two thirds of the screen and the MEPIS logo with Welcome in half a dozen languages taking up the bottom third. Having reviewed the options I decided to boot into the default; Boot MEPIS with 1024x768, 2.4.26 Kernel English , then doing the input mod I boot up the Live disk. Once I am on the desktop I open the MEPIS Installation Center. Presented with a password dialog I enter the root password, 'root' which brings up the MEPIS Installation Center GUI. Selecting the Install MEPIS on hard Drive option in the left pane opens the HDD/Partition to install to option and the option to create partitions using QtParted. This is fine for those of us who do not mind getting down and dirty but is not for the average user. Although I do not think MEPIS is built with the average user in mind. That being said once MEPIS is installed and the major configs have been done I do not envision any difficulties for the average user. The installation is completed without further difficulty so lets have a look at what MEPIS has to offer. Read more here: |
