Step 2: Installing Tenable Nessus 4.2

Use the Teanable Webpage to download the following package and store it on your hard disk in the root directory:

Nessus-4.2.0-ubuntu804_i386.deb

Use the following commands to install Nessus:

cd /root
sudo dpkg –i Nessus-4.2.0-ubuntu804_i386.deb

Next we have to run a simple simple program which will add a user in the proper nessusd configuration files, and will send a signal to nessusd if it is running to notify it of the changes. The program will ask you for a login name, a password and rules (optional). Run it like this:

/opt/nessus/sbin/nessus-adduser

To run Nessus you need the register to get a license key. Nessus is still free for home users. Commercial organizations that use the Nessus vulnerability scanner must purchase a ProfessionalFeed subscription.

Get a “HomeFeed” subscription from here. The registration key will be sent by mail to you.

Use the following command from your Konsole to activate your account and to receive the latest Nessus Plugins.

/opt/nessus/bin/nessus-fetch --register [your key]

Nessus is now fetching the newest plugin set from plugins.nessus.org
