Linux-Tip News

We are proud to present Linux-Tip Europe. This page is designed to provide the Linux users community (not only in Europe) with news and articles that are of interest to them. It works by allowing members of the community to submit news and articles relating to Linux hardware and software. This same community can then decide what tips should be promoted based on what they consider to be the most important or interesting to the community by voting stories up and down. Stories that receive enough votes are promoted to the Linux-Tip Europe homepage. Bookmark and Share

Virus scanning with F-Secure Rescue CD 3.00 Print E-mail
Sunday, 07 September 2008
F-Secure Internet Security provides the Secure Rescue CD 3.00. This Live-CD is able to scan your computer but also all attached devices like USB drives (FAT32 and NTFS formatted). The virus definition database can be updated automatically by using the internet or manually by using a USB drive. Here are the step by step instructions.

Step 1:  Downloading the software and creating the Live CD

Download the zip file from here, unzip it and use your preferred burning tool to burn it to a CD-ROM.

Step 2:  Getting the latest virus definition database

If you are investigating a virus infected computer, it is not a good idea to connect it to the internet. For that reason, download the latest virus definitions using a healthy computer from the link below and store them using a USB device 256 MB or greater in size. Make sure to copy the file fsdbupdate.run in the root directory of the USB device.

Nevertheless, the software is able to download the latest definitions from the Internet automatically, but you have to configure the network settings using DHCP.

Step 3: Running the Live CD and scanning your computer

Insert the CD you have burned in step 1  and connect your USB stick too. Boot your computer from CD-ROM (make sure to use the correct settings in the BIOS) and follow the instructions given on the screen.
After selecting the devices you are able the start scanning and to see any malware found. Just use the following key combinations:

Alt-F1 Shows the status screen
Alt-F5 To see the details of files being scanned
Alt-F6 To see any malware found
Ctrl-C To cancel scanning

Attention: Please keep in mind, the scanning process will rename all files containing malware to .virus file extension. This could break your Windows or Linux start-up configuration.
