Linux-Tip News

We are proud to present Linux-Tip Europe. This page is designed to provide the Linux users community (not only in Europe) with news and articles that are of interest to them. It works by allowing members of the community to submit news and articles relating to Linux hardware and software. This same community can then decide what tips should be promoted based on what they consider to be the most important or interesting to the community by voting stories up and down. Stories that receive enough votes are promoted to the Linux-Tip Europe homepage. Bookmark and Share

The  VectorLinux Website is promising: “Speed, performance, stability -- these are attributes that set VectorLinux apart in the crowded field of Linux distributions. VectorLinux is a lighterweight, fast, Linux operating system for Intel-AMD x86 compatible systems and is based upon Slackware, one of the original Linux distributions…”
Linux-Tip was testing the installation and usage of version 5.8 (Standard Gold).

StumbleUpon Toolbar Stumble It!

VectorLinux is based on Slackware and the goal of the Standard Version is to support especially Internet workstation on older machines. They decribe the softwae as: “Secure, stable and sleek” but also “incredibly fast” on modern computers.
This is a detailed description about how to install and set up VectorLinux.

The VectorLinux Website is very well prepert to get all information you need for the installation, but also to get help or proper ducumentation in case of problems.
The following versions are curently released:

We would like to point out that  this is not the only way of setting up such a system. There are many ways of achieving this goal but this is the way we toke. We do not issue any guarantee that this will work for you as well!

Step 1 Installation:

This is the first screen you will see after launching the installation process. You will have the possibility to select other boot kernels by pressing F1.

 Hit Enter to continue…

In the next screen you have to select what kind of keyboard you would like to use. Start the installation after finding the installation media.

The system should find the media. Confirm the message with YES.

Read the hard drive requirement carefully and start to setup a partition by launching the cfdisk utility. You need at least the SWAP and ROOT partition.

If you are using FDISK first time, you will perhaps have problems to understand the logic behind. I recommend starting with the SWAP partition. Use 500 MB for this partition and leave the rest for the ROOT partition.  The picture below shows the settings. Please do not forget to change the FS Type for the SWAP partition.  That’s it. Finally write the partitions to disk.

Return to Setup and start with the SWAP and ROT partition detection by using the menu below

I recommend using ext3 in this step.

There is no need to create additional partitions. Hit DONE

In the next two dialog screens you will get the chance to choose what main packages and individual software applications you install. The standard settings will be fine.

In this state you are ready to install VectorLinux to your system. Please review the choices you have made and, if necessary, go back and do some modifications. By clicking on OK you will start the installation process.

This is perhaps the time to get a cup of coffee or tea. The installation takes a little while.  After the installation is done, we will start with the post-install configuration.
