Lucane groupware quick start guide |

Page 1 of 3 Lucane is an open source groupware solution that
doesn’t require remarkable installation and configuration time. It is simple to
use and has a modular architecture including all needed groupware modules like
email-client, instant messaging, shared folders, calendar, white board, forums
and more.This short article will help you to start with
Lucane in a Linux and Windows environment and should give you in impression how
easy it is to install and to use.
Lucane is written in Java and was running without any
problems in our test environment consisting of Linux servers and clients and a
Windows XP client. We just need Java (JRE and JVM) and a database (MySQL or
Postgres). If you don't want to install a database, Lucane is bundled with
HSQLdb and requires no installation. We will use this database to keep it
simple.
This workshop setup could look like this:
Step 1 –
Linux Server installation
I’m using Mandriva Linux 2005 LE (DVD version) to
install the server, but it should work with other Linux distributions as well.
First, please make sure to have the packages j2re-1.4.2_07-1mdk installed. Please find it on your installation
DVD or download it here:
http://rpms.mandrivaclub.com/rpms/mandrivaclub/comm/Development_Java.html
Second, download the Lucane RPM packages here and
store it into your installation directory (i.e. /installations):
http://lucane.org/EN/download/
The installation is like already mentioned very
simple. Just do this:
su
cd /installations
rpm –i lucane-0.7.5-1.noarch.rpm
Your Linux system will need some time to install Lucane.
After that, you will find the application in the following subdirectory:
/usr/local/lucane-0.7.5-bin
You will discover four subdirectories with all files
needed for the server, client or proxy setup and the documentation.
Its time to start the server with the following
commands. Please watch for errors:
cd
/usr/local/luvane-0.7.5-bin/server/bin
./server.sh &
Lucane is loading all necessary applications and will
(hopefully) end with the following message:
INFO: Server
is ready.
