Tip: Virtualbox on 64-bit Ubuntu works like a charm |
|
Saturday, 30 June 2007 |
|
Innotek's GPL-licensed Virtualbox
software lets you create a virtual operating environment inside your
PC's real operating system. I've been using Virtualbox for several
months now on a 32-bit laptop running Ubuntu 7.04, and I've been
impressed with the software. However, my main PC at home utilizes a
64-bit version of Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn, and Virtualbox didn't
support 64-bit OSes -- until this month. Now that I've tried it, I'm
happy to report it works just as well as its 32-bit sibling.

Fedora 7 offers several ISO images for installation -- a live CD with
GNOME, a live CD with KDE, and a regular ISO for users who want to do
server installations or customized installs. This is the first Fedora
release to provide a single image for desktop users, a la Ubuntu, and it has turned out well.

As I have explained earlier, there are different ways to connect to remote servers or workstations. You can use NoMachine’s NX server or the GPL solution called FreeNX. Other tools like RealVNC or VNC provide remote control software which lets you see and interact with desktop applications across the network.
One way to enforce the traffic security is to use the SSH by the way of X11 tunneling or port forwarding. SSH was developed to replace the insecure telnet, ftp, rcp, rlogin, rsh software. FreeNX is already perfectly using this technology. In this article I will show, how to forward X11 using ssh without any additional software on the Linux site. Additionally I will explain how to run Linux applications on Windows XP clients using PuTTY and X-Deep/32.

This tutorial shows how you can set up a Fedora 7
desktop that is a full-fledged replacement for a Windows desktop, i.e.
that has all the software that people need to do the things they do on
their Windows desktops. The advantages are clear: you get a secure
system without DRM restrictions that works even on old hardware, and
the best thing is: all software comes free of charge.

Defending against brute force ssh attacks |
|
Saturday, 02 June 2007 |
|
During 2005, bute force attacks on the ssh service
became pretty popular.
These attacks are based on a rather simple idea:
use an automated program for trying, one after the other, many
combinations of standard or frequently used account names and likewise
frequently used password (e.g.: guest/guest).
