As I have explained earlier, there are different ways to connect to remote servers or workstations. You can use NoMachine’s NX server or the GPL solution called FreeNX. Other tools like RealVNC or VNC provide remote control software which lets you see and interact with desktop applications across the network.
One way to enforce the traffic security is to use the SSH by the way of X11 tunneling or port forwarding. SSH was developed to replace the insecure telnet, ftp, rcp, rlogin, rsh software. FreeNX is already perfectly using this technology. In this article I will show, how to forward X11 using ssh without any additional software on the Linux site. Additionally I will explain how to run Linux applications on Windows XP clients using PuTTY and X-Deep/32.

Defending against brute force ssh attacks |
|
Saturday, 02 June 2007 |
|
During 2005, bute force attacks on the ssh service
became pretty popular.
These attacks are based on a rather simple idea:
use an automated program for trying, one after the other, many
combinations of standard or frequently used account names and likewise
frequently used password (e.g.: guest/guest).

|
Sunday, 20 May 2007 |
NoMachine NX is a Terminal Server and Remote Access solution based on open source technologies. It makes it possible to run any graphical application on any operating system across any network connection as if you were sitting in front of your computer.
Besides all the professional NX servers for enterprises, NoMachine also offers a free server, which offers most of the features available in the commercial version. It is allowing 1-2 user sessions suitable for home users and those who are not interested in support. If you'd like to discover how NoMachine's servers work or are configured, give it a try! Howto install a content filtering and virus checking proxy (Part II) |
|
Friday, 11 May 2007 |
|
Commercial filters are often expensive, especially when used on a large number of computers, as would be the case in a school computer lab or in small or medium companies with computer networks. In contrast, open source filters are generally freely available for download. In addition, since commercial filters are proprietary, in many cases the system administrator does not have the opportunity to modify or even view the lists of blocked sites.

Howto install a content filtering and virus checking proxy (Part I) |
|
Wednesday, 11 April 2007 |
All Internet content carries a risk. Content Filtering helps companies and home users to stop unwanted data. It is used as part of Internet Firewalls or Proxy Servers to screen the content of all incoming Internet traffic. Content filtering usually works by specifying character strings that, if matched, indicate undesirable content that is to be screened out. Content is typically screened for pornographic content and sometimes also for violence- or hate-oriented content. To be effective you need a database or list of domains and URLs that should be blocked. Building and maintaining your own blacklist would require a huge investment in time. In the first part (Part I) of the workshop we will use a downloaded list which you can later update on the regular bases. Part II of the workshop will explain how to add a virus scan engine to the existing configuration using ClamAV.
