Secure your webserver using SSL and TinyCA
Sunday, 07 October 2007
SSL is especially suited for HTTP since it can provide some protection even if only one side of the communication is authenticated. In the case of HTTP transactions over the Internet, typically, only the server side is authenticated. This workshop explains how to setup a virtual host using OpenSSL and TinyCA on an OpenSuse 10.2 server.

Apache virtual hosts quick and easy
Wednesday, 03 October 2007
Virtual hosts are used to run more than one web site on a single machine. Virtual hosts can be "IP-based", meaning that you have a different IP address for every web site, or "name-based", meaning that you have multiple names running on each IP address. You can also run your web pages on different ports like 8080 or 8090. The fact that they are running on the same physical server is not apparent to the end user. This workshop describes the different setups based on an OpenSuse 10.2 server.

Xara Xtreme for Linux, a powerful graphics program
Wednesday, 12 September 2007
Xara Xtreme for Linux is a powerful, general purpose graphics program for Unix platforms including Linux, FreeBSD and (in development) OS-X. Xara Xtreme is based on Xara Xtreme for Windows . The source code was made available open-source in early 2006, and is being ported to Linux. The downloadable  version of Xara Xtreme for Linux  is working straight away on most Linux machines, but  the development is continuing daily. At the moment  two versions are available for download. The first is the recommended download because it will normally be the most stable. The second is the very latest, but untested version, built and published automatically. Warning: It may be unstable. Linux-Tip was using  the latest stable version provided as an “Autopackage Archive” on a Open Suse 10.2 Desktop. We recommend connecting your system to the Internet. In this case the script  can easily download and install the necessary packages automatically.

In this how-to, we are going to run the SNMP server and cacti on the same host and bind the service to localhost. This way, SNMP service won't be accessible from the outside. This is a good configuration when all you want to do is monitoring your home network router for instance.
